What AI does and doesn't do for your Odoo

By now every vendor is doing something with it. Little of it touches the place where you lose time every day. A level-headed look at what genuinely works in an Odoo environment today, and what is still sales talk.

What AI does and doesn't do for your Odoo

The question we get most often is whether Odoo can “do something with AI”. The honest answer: yes, but almost never where people look for it. People think of an assistant that answers questions about revenue. The gain lies in the work nobody talks about — retyping.

Start with the dull work

Invoice recognition is the clearest example. An incoming purchase invoice is read, recognised and prepared as a draft: supplier, amount, VAT, lines. Someone checks it and posts it. At a hundred invoices a month, that quickly saves a day. It is not exciting, it simply works, and it is included in Odoo Enterprise.

The gain from AI in an ERP rarely lies in the questions you ask. It lies in the work you no longer have to do.

What works today

In practice, three things live up to their promise:

  • Invoice recognition — purchase invoices are read and prepared as drafts. Included in Enterprise and pays for itself from roughly a hundred invoices a month.
  • Bank reconciliation — the system suggests the match, you confirm it. Saves the most time when there are many small payments.
  • Writing text — product descriptions, emails, a summary of a customer conversation. A fine starting point, but always proofread.

Where it goes wrong

And three things we actively advise clients against — or at least warn them about:

  • Asking your data questions — sounds good, goes wrong as soon as the question concerns margin or VAT. A report that is always right is worth more than an answer that is usually right.
  • Automatic posting without review — recognition is not approval. You still need someone who checks.
  • AI as an excuse to leave a poor process in place — if the foundation is wrong, AI only speeds up the problem.

The question you should ask

Not: “can Odoo do AI?” But: which task do we do by hand most often this month? If the answer is retyping, looking things up or forwarding, there is probably something to automate — with or without AI. A well-configured workflow or a simple rule is often cheaper and more reliable than a model.

We are happy to spend an hour looking at it. Not to sell you something that carries the AI label, but to see where your time is being lost.
